There are many benefits to using timber for mould construction. Depending on design we can go from drawing board to delivery in a relatively short time frame, wood is naturally sourced and perfect for those with an eco-friendly focus. But should you consider timber instead of other options out there? This blog will provide a host of reasons why we believe the answer should be yes.
What does ‘sustainable timber’ mean?
The term ‘sustainable timber’ generally means that the wood that has been harvested has been done so from well-managed forests. To fit these criteria, there should be measures in place to ensure trees are being continuously replenished to keep the wildlife stable. Additionally, the harvesting method needs to have no detrimental impact on the surrounding environment and be conscious of the plants and animals living nearby.
Here in the UK, both the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) are responsible for managing the sustainability of commercially harvested timber.
What are the benefits?
- Negative carbon material – When trees and timber are harvested in a sustainable manner, the carbon absorbed stays locked within the product. This removes carbon from the atmosphere which has a positive impact on the environment. Greenhouse gases, such as carbon monoxide contribute significantly to climate change and contribute to smog, air pollution and other related situations.
- Minimal processing – As it is a natural product, timber requires less invasive and energy-consuming methods to bring it to market. In turn, this releases less of the harmful gases into the atmosphere such as sulphur dioxide or hydrocarbons as other building materials do.
- Renewable – On average, it takes around 25 years for a tree to grow to a harvestable size. Other building materials such as steel and plastics take hundreds of thousands of years, in comparison.
Here at 3D Pattern and Mould Makers Ltd, we manufacture a wide range of timber moulds for various products. Sustainability is at the heart of our designs and, for this reason, we only use materials supplied from well-managed forests and FSC certified suppliers. We believe that taking a responsible position when it comes to the protection of our environment benefits everyone and should be something we focus on as a priority.
